MEET YOUR FINALIST...

Jane Smith, Somerset

Having supported two of my own children through eating disorders, I’ve personally experienced the anguish and heartache a mother faces as her children suffer. There is a lack of support services to help families and I want this to change. I’m passionate about helping other mothers and hope to develop a befriending service in order to make this happen.

Thousands of mothers in the UK are coping every day with the demands, heartache and anxieties that come with supporting their child through an eating disorder. From my own experience, I know women feel frightened and isolated as they desperately try to care for their children. This can often result in mothers suffering periods of stress and depression themselves. In many cases the pressure becomes unbearable and causes the entire family to breakdown.

I hope to develop Anorexia Bulimia Care’s befriending service and provide extended telephone and email support to mothers whose children are battling eating disorders. With most of the treatment and help focused on the sufferer, often a mother's own needs will be ignored. The befriending service will offer these women hope, encouragement and comfort. We will provide women with a safe, non-judgmental place to share their desperation, fears and concerns. This service will help women to better support their children and their families to full recovery.
